I met Alia a few years ago when I photographed both of her brother’s weddings, so I was delighted when she gave me a call to ask for if I could cover their wedding photography at The Decorium in Wood Green, North London. This was a coming together of Hindu and Muslim cultures and the following day we would have further celebrations in Alia’s grandfather’s Mosque, along with the best Asian food in London, bar none! Being truly one of the nicest families I have ever met, I was really looking forward to seeing Alia and the family once again after having photographed her brother’s wedding a few years ago.
With Alia and Aj’s wedding falling on a busy bank holiday weekend, which is always a crazily busy time of the year for photographing weddings, I was thankful to have the day off before the big day. A bit of recharging the batteries, literally and figuratively, and putting the feet up was in order! On the day of the wedding I headed up to North London to photograph Alia’s bridal preparation. When I walked in the door I was made to feel so welcome with hospitality second to none. As usual I started off photographing all the details then moved on to the action and excitement that was there in abundance! Time flew, as it always does, and soon I hopped into my car and made my way to The Decorium where the ceremony and reception would take place.
I met a slightly nervous Aj and his family along with the guests who had started to arrive. Rewinding a bit, I did an engagement shoot with Alia and Aj a couple of months before the wedding and got to know Aj and his brilliant sense of humour better, so was looking forward to more classic one liners from him on the day! Shortly afterwards Alia arrived along with her bridesmaids and flower girls and we were all ready to roll. The short civil ceremony included a couple of heartfelt words from close family members and many laughs!
We then all made our way outside onto the lawns of an adjacent park for the group shots. Khalid and Tariq’s, Alia’s brothers, they were super helpful and organised in helping to gather people so that we could work through the list nice and efficiently. It was then time for the couple shoot as everyone made their way back inside. With glorious sunshine we spent a half hour or so capturing a nice variety of shots before re-joining all the guests.
The Decorium is quite a spectacular and unique looking venue, with a large capacity, and was fabulously decorated. After the couple made their entrance we started the first of the speeches, and then enjoyed some delicious food before wrapping up the remainder of the speeches, followed by the cutting of the cake and then the first dance. The dance floor was jammed packed and even by the time I had wrapped up, there was no sign of any space on the dance floor!
