My Approach as a Wedding Photographer

My philosophy of a wedding from a photographer’s point of view is that it is the couple’s day and I am there to capture the best possible images in the most unobtrusive and friendly manner whilst leaving the bride, groom and guests to enjoy themselves.

I would describe my style of wedding photography as a blend of natural, stylish, contemporary photography mixed with a photojournalistic style, otherwise known as reportage wedding photography. In summary, the only time I will interact directly is during the group shots and the couple portrait session after the ceremony. I am very calm, friendly and go about my work in a quiet, efficient manner. I often receive comments from brides and grooms that they hardly noticed I was there. This I believe is a key attribute which enables yourselves and your guests to enjoy your day to the full without any unnecessary intrusion.

How will I go about photographing your wedding?

During the bridal preparations I will creatively photograph the dress, shoes, jewellery and all the other details in addition to the excitement and emotions of all that is going on. This is done in a very discrete manner, leaving you to get on with having your hair and make-up done and having some fun before the ceremony.  If there is sufficient time we can then capture some stunning bridal portraits prior to departing for the ceremony.

Regarding the ceremony – be it a Registry, Civil, Church, Hindu or any other type of wedding, I once again strive to capture all the little moments, including the big ones! Moments such as the look on the groom’s face when the bride is walking up the aisle; the exchange of rings and the joy and emotion of the first kiss and the reaction of family and guests.

After the ceremony, I am more than happy to shoot as many group shots as you wish. I will provide a general guideline as to how long a set number of individual groups would take to photograph as this can then be built into the running order of your wedding day. I am more than happy for guests to take their own shots over my shoulder as they are there to enjoy themselves too! All I ask is that I capture the each group first. Then I am happy for guests to take their shots before we form the next group.

The other part of the day where I will be directly interacting is during the couple portrait session. This typically happens a short while after the ceremony has ended and the group shots have been taken. During this session we will leave the guests for a short while and capture a variety of stunning images in and around your venue. I am certainly not into rigid posing techniques by any means and my approach is to find the best light and background and then leave the bride and groom to interact in a natural manner. Just as you would if you were alone and sharing some time together. This, I believe, results in the most natural and comfortable looking images. Here in the UK we cannot always be certain of glorious summer days, or at least sunny days. In this regard I am highly adept at handling soft light when conditions are overcast as well as harsh direct sunlight. Contrary to many other photographers who prefer open shade and soft light, I love using harsh direct sunlight to fantastic effect. This is a little bit out of the ordinary, but when used correctly it results in images that have great impact and stand out from the everyday images one would normally expect. If it rains then we can head indoors and still capture a lovely variety of shots and maybe pop out a little later for a brief portrait session.

The couple portrait session typically lasts between half an hour to an hour or beyond. The duration is entirely up to you. My aim is to get you back to your guests as soon as possible so this session will not consume any more time than is required. Once again this can be discussed prior to your wedding and built into your running order for the day so that the time is allocated to it.

The balance of the day will be spent capturing all those candid little moments where the bride, groom and guests are interacting with one another and of course the first dance. I like to emphasize the fun and laughter on the day and make this come across in the wedding photographs.

The Engagement or Pre-Wedding Photo Shoot

Many couples have never really had a session with a professional photographer. An engagement shoot is typically shot at an outdoor location such as a park or an urban city environment. It is a fantastic way to get used to being in front of the camera in a very relaxed, stress free environment.  We will spend an hour or two leisurely capturing some amazing images with the emphasis on natural, comfortable photography. Many couples use these images to make their guest signing book, a singing board or a lovely large framed print to display at their wedding reception.
